DC VFD
The DC motors were the first
electric motor and was built for operation from direct current power
over a 100 years ago. But the DC motors are still used today
and so a DC VFD are used on these motors to start, stop,
change direction and speed of the motor by turning potentiometers or
other operator devices. These controls may be an integral part
of the controller or may be remotely mounted. The DC VFD
converts a 3-phase AC voltage to an adjustable DC voltage which is
then applied to a DC motor armature.
DC VFDs consist of a SCR bridge, which converts incoming
single or three phase AC volts to DC volts. During this
conversion process the DC VFD then regulate speed, torque,
voltage and current conditions of the DC motor. The DC VFD
are ideal for applications such as tube mills, extruders, mixers,
paper machines and many other controlled applications.
Most VFDs are used on AC motors
and will course remain the prime movers for the fixed speed
requirements of industry. AC motors are the natural choice for
the majority of industrial drive applications. These motors
are dependable, rugged and have basic simple design.
There are 4 different types of
DC motors the shunt-wound motor, the series wound, compound wound
and the permanent magnet, each having their own operating
characteristics. It is helpful when choosing a DC VFD
to know the operating characteristics of these DC motors.
DC VFD - DC motor shunt wound
The shunt- wound motors the field controlled
is separate from the armature winding. With its constant armature
voltage and constant field excitation it has the characteristics of
a flat speed-torque. These motors offers simplified control
for reversing, especially for regenerative drives.
DC VFD - DC motor series wound
These motors offer high starting torque but
has poor speed regulation. they are used for low speed, very heavy
loads because of their design. The series wound motor has the
field connected in series with the armature.
DC VFD - DC motor compound wound
These motor utilizes a field winding in series
with the armature in addition to a shunt field, this offers a
compromise in performance between a series and a shunt wound type
motor. These motor offers a combination of good starting
torque and speed stability.
DC VFD - DC motor permanent magnet
The permanent magnet has a wound armature with
commentator and brushes, permanent magnets replace the field
winding. These motors has excellent starting torque, with
speed regulation slightly less than that of the compound motor.
Peak starting torque is limited to 150% or rated torque to avoid
demagnetizing the field poles.
