Manual VFD - What you should know about VFDs

Most VFDs are compact in size and weight and utilizes the latest in power-switching transistors, microprocessors, hardware, and software functions.  With the use of these devices their is very little you do manually to these VFD.  They offer accurate process control, shaft misalignment tolerant, and a variety of equipment mounting configurations.

Early VFDs operated in open loop and had limited performance. These AC VFD employed multiple transistors per phase due to their limited voltage and current rating.  A major milestones was the arrival of PWM (pulse-width modulated based drives) and the introduction of DTC (Direct Torque Control) in 1995.  The DTC was able to control motor torque and speed without the need of separate control for voltage and frequency.  With this technology, 100 percent torque is available at zero speed and small torque increments can be controlled at low frequencies.  For control, analog was the best at first, but with technology it gave way to digital control based on integrated circuits.  Microprocessors came somewhat later at offer only open-loop control.  With advance technology microprocessors (MPU) allowed multiple control types in the same drive, with only software parameter changes needed to switch control mode. 

Today, fast switching PMW are used because it minimal harmonic current production and dynamic motor torque control. Typical features such as speed and torque regulation,  ability to accept various analog and digital preferences, speed or torque feedback, extra I/O points, as well as control of synchronous and inductions motors.

Manual VFD - Considerations When Selecting a VFD

• A over-sizing of the VFD may be required is starting and stopping times are critical, or the load has a high starting torque.
   

• When a VFD operate more than one motor, the total peak currents of all the motors under worst operating conditions must be calculated.
   

• When the power supply source is switched while the VFD is running,  some drives will ride through a brief power outage while others may not.
   

• If the load is spinning, in the case of fan applications, then the load will be out of sync with the VFD.  This may pull the motor down to the lower frequency, which may require high current levels and cause over-current faults.
   

• A isolation transformer or line reactors may be required if power factor correction capacitors are being switched or exist on the intended motor loads, this will cause power disturbances in the distribution systems, and effects the VFDS
