VFD Electric works by varying the speed of an electric motor.  VFDs accomplished this by changing the frequency of the electric power going to the motor.  Most VFD electric works with three phase power but in some case single phase power.  In the United States normal electric power is 60 Hz.  At this frequency motors run at 1,800 rmp, 3,600 rmp, 1,200 rpm or 900 rpm, depending on how they are wound.  The number of poles in the winding determines its speed.  The speed of the motor changes in direct proportion to the hertz.  A  example a four-pole motor running at 45 hertz will turn 1,350 rpm, and a six-pole motor running at 1200 rpm at 40 hertz will run 800 rpm.

With a VFD electric component it is best to have it rated more horsepower than the motor being driven.  This offers more flexibility.  When electrical overload protection is important, the rating of the actual motor being driven should be loaded into the VFD.  

How VFD Electric controls the frequency

With a motor driven system it is controlled by the frequency of the supply voltage and rotates on a fixed speed.  A magnetic field is produced by the alternating current that rotates at synchronous speed.  The only only you can alternate a synchronous speed it by using a VFD electric, it is accomplished in three stages.  The rectifier stage, inverter stage and the control stage.  The rectifier stage changes the power to a higher adjustable DC voltage.  The inverter stage, the transistors in the rectified DC are switched off and on.  What this does is produces a voltage waveform at the frequency you want.  In the control stage, the voltage waveform receives information from the motor-driven system and will adjust the output voltage to the selected value.
