VFD does and how it works. A
VFD or a variable frequency drive is a drive that is added to
motor-driven systems in most cases to save energy. Motor-driven systems are designed to handle peak loads. When these operating systems work at reduced loads
for extended periods of time, it wastes energy. By adding a
VFD it allows you to adjust the motor-speed and match it with
motor-output load. The system is connected to the VFD and the
speed control is controlled by adjusting the frequency of the
motor-supply voltage.
VFD Frequency - How does an AC Variable
Frequency works
A VFD must simultaneously
control the output frequency and voltage to control the speed of a
induction motor. A induction motors rotate at a fixed speed
that is determined by the frequency of the supply voltage. A
VFD frequency controls the motor's speed, most common
induction motors are 60 Hz. and are
typically offered at no load speeds of 3600rmp (2 pole), 1800rpm (4
pole), and 1200rpm (6 pole). This speed may be calculated by
dividing line frequency by the number of magnetic pole pairs in the
motor winding. A example a four-pole motor has two pole
pairs, and the magnetic field will rotate 60 Hz/2=30 revolutions per
second, or 1800 rpm. The induction motor rotor will attempt to
follow this rotating magnetic field, and under load the rotor speed
slips slightly behind the rotating field. This slip speed
generates an induced current, and the resulting magnetic field in
the rotor produces torque.

frequency of the applied voltage.
VFDs convert the fixed
frequency supply voltage to a continuously variable frequency,
therefore allowing adjustable motor speed. How a VFD converts
to a new frequency is in two stages, the rectifier stage and the
inverter stage and the conversion process incorporates three

A solid-state, full wave rectifier converts
three-phase 60 Hz power from a standard 208, 460, 575 or higher to
either fixed or adjustable DC voltage. The system may also
include transformers if higher supply voltages are used.

Electronic switches, power transistors or
thyistors switch the rectified DC on and off, and produce a current
or voltage waveform at the desired new frequency. Depending on
the design of the inverter and filter controls the amount of

that receives feedback information from the motor and adjusts the
output voltage or frequency to the selected values. Usually
the output voltage is regulated to produce a constant ratio of
voltage to frequency. These VFDS may incorporate many complex

control the torque in the motor-driven system protects equipment
