The VFD pump has many functions to control pump performance.  VFD pumps can drive pumps to output constant water pressure perfectly.  They offer protection from dry run, leakage support, deficient water stop is standard in many of these VFD pump.  No low start current, water hamming, energy scale with flow, low vibration and runs quiet are a few of their features.  VFD Pump are used on centrifugal pump and offers the most favorable return based on energy saving.  

How a VFD Pump works

A centrifugal pump operates usually at a fixed flow established by the hard-piped system needs, but many applications or systems require variable flow to meet changing process demands. The two most common methods for controlling pump system output are control valve and a VFD.  Controlling the flow with a throttling valve is similar to using the brake pedal to control the speed of a car.  With a throttling valve, the pump speed is fixed and a control valve adds system resistance, changing the system curve and thus restricting the output of the pumping, while consuming nearly the same amount of energy.

With a VFD pump, it changes speed like our vehicle change speed by changing the engine's output.   Instead of changing the system resistance to modulate flow, the pump speed changes.  VFD pumps change the energy input rather than relying on a valve to strip system energy.  The VFD pump offers dramatic energy savings.  A VFD pump also extends the life of the pump by reducing bearing loads and shaft deflection. 

A pump operating 30% below the system flow rate will consume 61% less power.  If the pump operates at this level for 25% of the time in a 24-hr shift for 250 days per year and the cost of power is six cents per kW-hr, the savings would be around $1,217 per year.  If the pump has to overcome 60 ft of static head, the saving would be $941 per year.  As you can see it doesn't take long to pay for your VFD pump with these energy savings.  A VFD pump also reduces bearing and seal wear, which reduces downtime and maintenance costs an additional saving to the energy saving.  Many utilities and power companies also offer rebates for purchasing a VFD pump or some utilities companies penalties for poor power factor.
