VFDs

Variable frequency drives or VFD's are used in a wide variety of applications.  The most common application is pump and fan applications.  VFD's of today, are affordable and dependable, offering significant electrical energy savings and offers flexibility of control.  VFDs are specially effect where flow control is involved.  Because of a VFDs soft-start capabilities, which is associated with full voltage motor start-ups, it provides less electrical stresses and line voltage sags. These soft-start capabilities is especially important with high-inertia loads.

How a VFDs Work

To understand VFDs you need a clear understanding of the proper applications, and a basis knowledge of VFD theory and the different loads types offered.

For any application of a VFDs you have to understand the requirements of the load.  With a VFDS you must have ample current capability for the motor, this allows the motor to produce the required torque for the load.  One important factor you have to remember is machine torque is independent of motor speed and load horsepower increases linearly with rpm. 

VFDs - What is Torque Load?

All loads have a torque requirement, and it can be thought of as the "ooumph" of the motor.  The motor has to develop enough torque to get the load moving and keep it moving under all the conditions that are apply.  The purpose of the motor is to have enough torque to meet the requirements of the load, and all loads have a torque requirement that must be met by the motor.  Torque is an applied force that usually produce rotation and is measured in lb-ft or lb-in.  Horsepower is the time rate at which work is being done.  One horsepower is the power or requirements to lift 33,000 lbs 1 ft in 1 minute.  Below you have some basic equations that will help you better understand the relationship between hp, torque, and VFD speed.

• HP = (Torque X Speed)/5250
• Torque = (hp x 5250)/Speed
• An example = 1 hp motor operating at 1800 rpm will develop 2.92 lb-ft of torque.

Every load has different torque requirements that varies with the load's operations.  You need to know your load torque requirements, these torques must be supplied by the motor via the VFD.   You will need a clear understanding of these torques.

* The break-away torque is the torque required to start a load, usually this is greater than the torque required to maintain motion.

*  The accelerating torque is what brings the load to operating speed within a given time.

*  Running torque is required to keep the load moving at all speeds.

*  Peak Torque are occasional required by the load, a example would be a load being dropped on a conveyor.

*  Holding torque is required by the motor when operating as a brake, such loads would be down hill loads or high inertia machines.

VFDs applications are divided into these load types:

VFD Constant Torque Load -  Most of all general industrial machines falls in this load group.  These loads were considered DC drive applications only, but with high-performance flux vector VFDs available, these can be handled by a DC VFD.  Some examples of these loads are conveyors, printing presses, reciprocating compressors, rotary compressors, and hoists.  Constant horsepower loads are often found in the machine-tool industry and center driven winder applications.  Examples of constant horsepower loads are wheel grinders, large driller machines, lathes, planers, boring machines, and core extruders.

VFD Variable torque loads

Variable torque loads are found in such applications as fans, centrifugal blowers, propeller pumps, turbine pumps, centrifugal pumps and axial compressors.  These loads offer the greatest opportunity for energy savings.  The reason for this is that horsepower varies as the cube of speed and torque varies as square of speed for these loads.  When a motor speed is reduced by 20%, the motor horsepower is reduced by a cubic relationship (.8 x .8 x .8) or 51%.  Many utilities offer their customers subsidies if they use a VFDs for their applications.  Many VFD have software programs for customers to calculate and document energy saving by using these VFDs.
